This effort is focused on reducing the mass and cost, and enhancing the capabilties of science instruments appropriate for the Magnetospheric Imaging (MI) mission. As part of NASA's move toward smaller missions, the Sensors and Instrument Technology program is puting more emphasis on smaller, prinicple investigator class instruments (as opposed to larger, facility class instruments). To avoid conflict with the scientific peer review process used to competively select principle investigators, we have used the same open and competitive process to select instrument concepts for further investigation and technology development.
On December 15, 1994 we held a mid-term review of the progress made as a result of the NASA Research Announcement on Techniques and Technologies for Magnetospheric Imaging. We plan to make more information available on the specific tasks in the next month or so.
